CAORLE

Description of the area:

Caorle among “calli”, “campielli”, the bright colors of the houses of fishermen today restored and the beauty of the ancient noble palaces, the Duomo and the church of the Madonna di Pompei. It also very suggestive Rio Terrà delle Botteghe, the main street full of typical clubs and shops; near the Cultural Center bafile, the white lines visible on the pavement: indicate the boundaries of the canal buried in the 19th century that once crossed the old town! The parallel street is Calle Lunga and leads into Piazza Vescovado, the main square and true heart of our village with the Duomo, the Campanile and the ancient Praetorian Palace.

In the past, to characterize even more the marine soul of Caorle, there was the squero, the typical yard of the boats in Venetian style that could be admired passing through via francesconi a few steps from the port: in its place today there are bars and restaurants to enjoy the culinary excellence of our territory. The Church of the Madonna dell’Angelo (originally dedicated to the Archangel Michael, from whom the name) is a sanctuary built in its present structure in 1751 on remains of the VI or VII century of what was probably the most ancient religious building of Caorle: a little church with three wooden naves dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo.

Today the church is located in a very suggestive position (where the cliff ends and starts the beach of Levante), on a promontory that wedges into the Adriatic sea and has become over time a pilgrimage destination and for many faithful who come from all over the world. The lagoon of Caorle, much loved by Ernest Hemingway, is a protected natural area its particular flora for the many migratory and sedentary birds recorded (over 280 species including duck, tarabusino, heron red, coot, diving and mallard) and for the variety of fish that reproduce there. In the past it was here that fishermen lived with their families, in the typical wooden houses and reed called casoni, still visible today.
